Best Time for Chardham Family Tour

Let’s take a look at the best time to visit Chardham sites.

The gates to Char Dham sites are usually opened in summer. The best time to visit Char Dham sites is between late April to early July as the weather is cool and comfortable and the roads are accessible. However, you can have different experiences during the Char Dham journey depending on the season when you plan the yatra.

Summer

Summer season (May and June) is regarded to be the best time to visit the Char Dham sites as the weather is very pleasant. During the daytime pilgrims can enjoy enjoyable sunny days; however, night and early morning can be cold. During these months the average temperature ranges between 7°C and 25°C. You may encounter occasional rain showers so be prepared for it beforehand and carry an umbrella or raincoat.

Also, the gate of Char Dham sites opens in May and a huge number of devotees visit during this month. Thus, you’re advised to pre-book transportation and accommodations if you are thinking about visiting the sacred sites in May and June.

Monsoon (July to September)

July to September (Monsoon) is not a good time for Char Dham yatra because the region experiences heavy and frequent downpours which makes it challenging to trek. However, during the monsoon, the Himalayan landscapes take a unique transformation. The temperature during monsoon considerably drops with the average temperature ranging from 10°C to 20°C.

In monsoon, ascending mountain roads can on-foot journey even more challenging. During these months, the occurrence of landslides is quite common making them unfavorable. Flooding and overflowing rivers are the prime reasons not to travel during monsoon. Also, at regular intervals, the helicopter services may be adjourned in these months due to unfavorable climate and weather.

Winter (November-March)

Winters are considered to be harsh as you may have to deal with extreme weather conditions and heavy snowfall. The Char Dham Temples accessibility becomes extremely difficult in winter. The temperature even dips below zero and the lowest temperature ranges between -5°C to -15°C.

All Char Dham sites remain closed due to inaccessibility during these six winter months between November to March/April. This is done to ensure the safety of both the sacred sites and pilgrims. However, the entire landscape is completely draped in a blanket of white snow enhancing the picturesque beauty of the region.
