History of Gangotri Temple
As per Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took a river’s form to absolve King Bhagiratha’s predecessors' sins, following the penance he did over several centuries. Lord Shiva received the Ganga River into his matted locks. At her legendary source, she was called Bhagirathi.
After slaying on earth the demons King Sagar decided to stage an Ashwamedha Yajna. The horse that was needed to be taken on a journey around the earth was to be accompanied by the 60,000 sons of the king that were born to Queen Sumati and Asamanja one son born of Kesani, the second queen. Indra, the gods' supreme ruler feared that if the ‘Yagya’ succeeded he might be thrown out of his celestial throne. Therefore, he took away the horse and tied it to Kapil Muni’s ashram.
King Sagar’s sons started searching for the horse and found it tied in the ashram of meditating Kapil. King Sagara’s sixty thousand angry sons stormed Sage Kapil’s ashram. When Sage Kapil opened his eyes, King Sagara’s 60,000 sons had perished, by Sage Kapil’s curse. Bhagiratha, King Sagar’s grandson, is considered to have meditated for years to please the Goddess Ganga to liberate the souls of his ancestors, granting them salvation.
