Triyuginarayan is situated in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag District. It is located at an altitude of around 1,980 meters above sea level. Summer months (May and June) are considered to be the best to visit Kedarnath. Alternatively, you can also visit the sacred site between September and October, before winter’s onset. Due to heavy snowfall and extremely cold weather, the Kedarnath Temple remains closed from November onwards. The roads become impassable during these months.
April, May, and June are considered to be the best months to visit Kedarnath as the weather remains cool and comfortable. The average temperature during these months ranges around 15 to 30 degrees Celsius. The days are pleasant, while the nights are a bit cold. You can attend the Kedar festival by visiting Kedarnath in June.
You’re not advised to visit Kedarnath in the monsoon season due to the chances of heavy rainfall during this time. During this season, the average temperature ranges from 12°C to 27°C. In August, the day before Raksha Bandhan marks Shravani Annakoot Mela’s celebration, a colourful and vibrant festival cherished by locals.
October to March marks the winter season in Kedarnath. During these months the weather reaches freezing temperatures. Due to heavy rainfall, the temple remains closed. In the winter, roads are inaccessible making traveling very challenging. In the winter, Lord Kedar’s idol is shifted to Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath. Once a year, on the temple’s closing day, Samadhi Pooja is conducted.

The nearest airport to Kedarnath is Jolly Grant Airport situated at a distance of around 238 km. The airport has good connectivity with Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Lucknow and Thiruvananthapuram. By taxis and buses, it is connected to Gaurikund. From Gaurikund, you will have to undertake a 16 Km trek to reach Kedarnath.
The nearest railhead to Kedarnath is Rishikesh Railway Station. The distance of Rishikesh from Kedarnath is around 216 km. This railway station has good connectivity to major cities of the country. Numerous trains run daily on this route, and Rishikesh can be visited easily by pilgrims. From the railway station, you can board a bus or hire a taxi to reach Gaurikund.
From Kedarnath, Gaurikund is the nearest motorable area. Around it, there are intra and inter-state bus services that run around. These buses connect Kedarnath’s vicinity with Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Srinagar, Rishikesh, Dehradun, Delhi, Uttarkashi, Haryana, Haridwar, Chandigarh and many other destinations.
