Yamunotri Dham is one of the most sacred destinations in India. A visit to the temple is believed to cast off the dangers of agonizing or untimely death. It is believed that the King of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah, built the Yamunotri Temple in 1839. The temple houses idols of Goddess Ganga as well as Yamuna.

Yamunotri Temple is one of the most sacred shrines in India. It is situated at an altitude of around 3,293 meters and has been built in honor of Goddess Yamuna. The shrine is surrounded by breathtaking glaciers and snow-capped Himalayan peaks. It marks the source of River Yamuna and is known for its peaceful ambiance and sacred vibes.
Janki Chatti marks the starting point of the Yamunotri trek. You can complete the 6 km trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti in 2.5 hours to 3 hours. It also has many hot springs where you can take a holy dip before beginning your trek. Jankichatti also has a wide range of budget accommodation options such as hotels, ashrams, and lodges.
Hanuman Chatti is a small hamlet situated at a distance of around 13 km from Yamunotri. It is a great trekking point to Dodi Tal, Darwa Top, and Yamunotri. The prime attraction of Hanuman Chatti is the Hanuman Temple which is highly revered amongst the Hindus. Before the road to Janki Chatti was constructed Hanuman Chatti was the Yamunotri Dham’s starting point.
Surya Kund is situated near Yamunotri Temple in Uttarakhand. This hot water spring is surrounded by Kalindi Mountains. The spring’s hot water is used to cook potato or rice tied in a muslin cloth. By eating the prasad made from the Kund’s water you can fulfill all your desires.
Barkot is one of the most picturesque towns in Uttarakhand. The Yamuna and Ganga rivers pass through this town enhancing its prominence for visitors. From Barkot you can have a breathtaking view of Bandarpoonch Mountain. It also has many trekking trails and you can enjoy here white water rafting.
Saptarishi Kund is believed to be Yamuna River’s original source. This high-altitude lake is situated at a height of around 4421 metres and is a famous trekking spot. It is revered as the seven sages (Rishi Atri, Bharadwaj, Rishi Kashyap, Vasistha, Jamadagni, Vishwamitra, and Gautama) This Kund is fed by the Champasar glacier situated in the Champasar mountainous region’s upper area.
Divya Shila is situated outside the Yamunotri Temple. This sacred stone is also called the "slab of divine light." Before entering the temple, devotees worship Divya Shila. Generally, the devotees take a holy dip in Surya Kund and cook potatoes and rice tied in a muslin cloth using the hot water of the Kund. At Divya Shila, the prasad is offered first and then taken to the main temple.
September-November and May-June are the ideal months to visit Yamunotri as the weather remains pleasant making sightseeing enjoyable. Yamunotri remains cold all around the year so you should carry woollen clothes even if you’re visiting the region in summer. If you visit Yamunotri during festivals such as Phool Devi, Basant Panchami, etc. you can witness a more colourful side of the region.
In Yamunotri, summers start in April and end in July. During this season, you can expect the average temperature to be between 6°C to 20°C. During summer days are pleasant while the temperature drops down at night. Hence you should carry warm clothing if you’re planning to visit Yamunotri in summer. During this season, a pilgrimage and sightseeing trip can be best enjoyed.
Yamunotri witnesses heavy downpours in the monsoon which makes travelling a bit difficult. The monsoon season lasts from mid-July till the September end. During this season, you may have to face some difficulties such as landslides while visiting this region. The roads may also be blocked during this time.
October marks the beginning of the monsoon season which last till March. In winter the temperature is very cold with heavy snowfall. The average temperature during this time generally ranges between 0 to 5°C and can even go down below -7°C. The roads are blocked during this season, thus visitors should not plan a visit during this season.
Yamunotri Temple can’t be reached directly by roadways. It can only be reached via Kharsali or Jankichatti. You will have to first reach Delhi and then you can hire a taxi or catch a bus to the major places in Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Rishikesh, Srinagar, or Haridwar. Then you can either take the bus service from Haridwar to Yamunotri or reach the nearest point to Yamunotri via Rishikesh. To reach the Temple, you will have to undertake a short trek from Jankichatti to Yamunotri on foot in Kanwar Yatra.
The closest railway station to Yamunotri Shrine is Rishikesh Railway Station, situated on NH58 Uttarakhand. Rishikesh is considered to be the shortest way to reach Yamunotri by train. From Delhi to Rishikesh you can get on the train and continue your travel by helicopter or on-road. You can take a cab or bus to Barkot from Rishikesh Railway Station and get into the sharable jeeps to Janki Chatti from Barkot. Continue your journey to Yamunotri by embarking on a six-kilometer trek route on foot or by hiring a mule or a pony.
The nearest airport to Yamunotri is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From the Dehradun Airport Delhi is just 202 km. In an hour you can reach Delhi and then take the helicopter to Kharsali from the Sahastradhara Road, which is just 94 km. You can trek through Kharsali to reach Yamunotri Temple.
Ans: Yes, registration is required for visiting any of the Chardham sites including Yamunotri. Registration can be done online or through counters that are centrally located at Janki Chatti, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.
Ans: The Yamunotri Temple opens in April-May, on Akshay Tritiya’s holy day. After the grand celebration of Diwali, the pilgrimage season comes to an end on Bhai Dooj. Yamunotri Temple remains closed for pilgrims for around six months in the winter.
Ans: You will find a limited number of hotels at Yamunotri. You can stay at hotels in Syan Chatti and Janki Chatti which are a few kilometers away from Yamunotri Temple.
