Religious Significance of Chardham Yatra

The Chardham Yatra is one of the most sacred Yatra in the entire Hinduism. The four Dhams have been standing strong for hundreds of years, braving the mountainous cold. Moreover, the Himalayan and the harsh terrains there test the pilgrim’s endurance and faith as well. The legends associated with the Dhams are deeply rooted in Hindu mythology.  Here are the magnificent and mighty Char Dhams:

Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri Temple

Yamunotri marks the starting point for the Chardham Yatra. The shrine here is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, the daughter of the Sun god and sister of Yama, the god of death. It’s believed that whoever visits the Yamunotri Dham never gets Akaal Mrityu, untimely death. Near the temple, lies the hot spring called Surya Kund, which is believed to have therapeutic properties. Pilgrims use this hot water to cook rice and potatoes for Prasad.

Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Temple

Gangotri Dham is considered the source of the holy river Ganga. Perched at a lofty height of 3100 metres, the Dham is a symbol of purity and divinity. As far as the legend goes, King Bhagirath underwent intense penance to call Goddess Ganga on earth. His wish was to cleanse the sins of his ancestors. However, the flow of the pious river was too much to be borne by the earth. To help, Lord Shiva took the river flow in his matted locks first and then allowed it to descend down gradually.

Even today, it’s believed that the holy waters of the Ganga cleanses the devotees’ sins and purifies their souls. Pilgrims collect the Ganga water and bring it back home to purify their spaces.

Kedarnath Dham

Kedarnath

Kedarnath Dham is extra special because not only is it one of the Chardhams, but it’s also a Jyotirlinga as well as a Panch Kedar. Perched at a giant height of 3,583 metres, the Dham Yatra is one of the toughest in the entire Chhota Dham circuit.

The legend of the temple is associated with Mahabharata. After the Kurukshetra war concluded, the Kauravas were burdened with overwhelming guilt and decided to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva. However, he didn’t intend to forgive them so easily. To avoid them, he transformed into the form of a bull and went to Kedarnath. When Bhima tried to catch him, the bull took a dive into the ground and disappeared! However, his hump was left behind. Pandavas decided to build a temple at this place and worshipped Lord Shiva.

It’s said that visiting Kedarnath brings pilgrims close to Moksha – liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath Temple

Badrinath Dham is highly auspicious as it’s a part of both the Chhota as well as Bada Chardham circuit. It is believed that visiting the Badrinath shrine grants the devotee liberation from the cycle of birth and death. Situated as high as 3,133 metres on the banks of the Alaknanda River, the temple offers a peaceful ambiance to those who want to mediate on its premises.

As per the legends, Lord Vishnu was once meditating in Badrinath. The weather was cold but being deep in meditation, he didn’t pay attention to it. However, his consort, Goddess Laxmi, got ahold of the situation and rushed to protect him from the mountainous cold. She took the form of a Badri tree and shielded him from the icy weather. When Lord Vishnu got to know about it, he became very pleased with her and named her Badri, and himself came to be known as Badrinath!

The Dham has a very spiritual aura and soothes anyone who is in the vicinity.
